Dispensary Digital Menus vs. Digital Shelf Tags: What Each Does and When You Need Both

TV menu boards and digital shelf tags solve different problems in a dispensary. How each works, how they connect to your POS, and how to choose.

Walk into most modern dispensaries and you'll see TV screens on the wall listing products and prices. Fewer have digital tags on the shelves or display cases themselves. Both are "digital pricing," but they do different jobs. This guide explains the difference and how to decide what your store needs.

Digital menus: the big-screen overview

A digital menu is a TV or display screen, usually on the wall or above the counter, showing categories, products, prices and specials.

What they're good at:

  • Showing a lot of products at once, organized by category or effect.
  • Promoting daily deals and featured brands with eye-catching layouts.
  • Updating automatically when they're connected to your point-of-sale system.

One menu provider, Seed, argues in its buyer's guide that POS integration is essential: without it, menus need manual updates and drift out of date. The guide lists common cannabis POS systems that menu providers connect to, including Flowhub, Leaflogix, Treez, Blaze, Cova, Meadow and Jane. It also advises comparing total cost, including per-screen fees, hardware, support and onboarding.

Where they fall short: a menu on the wall doesn't tell a customer standing at a display case which jar or package costs what. Customers still ask, and budtenders still answer.

Digital shelf tags: the price at the product

Digital shelf tags are small screens, often E-Ink, attached to shelves, display cases or product bins. Each shows the price of the item in front of it.

What they're good at:

  • Answering "how much is this one?" without a conversation.
  • Keeping the price at the product consistent with your current promotions.
  • Reducing mismatches between the shelf and the register, which inspectors check in many states. Under the NIST Handbook 130 procedure many states follow, a store passes a price check at 98% accuracy or better.

Where they fall short: small tags hold limited information. They aren't built for browsing a full menu or showing product descriptions.

How they fit with compliance systems

Most dispensaries run a cannabis-specific POS because many states require sales to be reported to a seed-to-sale tracking system such as Metrc. Cova's guide to Metrc explains that in states where Metrc is mandated, dispensaries need a POS that integrates with it so sales and inventory movements are reported.

That matters for pricing technology: your POS is usually the source of truth. Whatever menu or tag system you choose, the question is how prices get from the POS to the screen or tag, either automatically through an integration or by someone updating them.

Do you need both?

  • Menu only: works if most products are behind the counter and customers order from the board.
  • Tags only: works for smaller stores where customers browse cases and shelves.
  • Both: common in larger stores. The menu sells; the tags confirm the price at the product.

Questions to ask any vendor

  1. Does it connect to my POS, and is the sync automatic?
  2. What happens when a promotion starts or ends?
  3. What are the full costs: hardware, per-screen or per-tag fees, support and setup?
  4. Can I control it remotely, or does someone need to be in the store?
  5. How readable is it from where customers actually stand?

Where PriceTaglet fits, and our pilot program

PriceTaglet makes digital shelf tags, not wall menus. We started with coin and bullion stores, where prices change with the gold and silver markets. The same pieces work in a dispensary: E-Ink tags that are readable in bright light, a hub that plugs into an outlet, a browser dashboard for setting prices, and our own tag designs. We don't integrate with cannabis POS or tracking systems yet.

We're looking for a dispensary to be our first pilot partner in cannabis retail. If you want to try digital tags on your cases and help shape what we build for dispensaries, contact us through our early access page.
