Black Friday and Holiday Sales at Gun Stores: Pricing Promotions the Right Way

Planning holiday promotions at a gun store: honest was/now pricing, keeping shelf and register prices matched, and handling busy-season demand.

The stretch from Black Friday through the end of the year is one of the busiest seasons for many gun stores. It's also when pricing mistakes are most likely: lots of promotions, lots of customers, and staff stretched thin. This guide covers how to plan holiday promotions that are honest, accurate and easy to run.

Demand context going into the season

Firearms demand has been active in 2026. According to NSSF-adjusted background check figures reported by AmmoLand, August 2026 checks were up 2.2% from the year before, and NFA-related checks were roughly triple the prior August. NSSF cautions that background checks are not the same as sales. But a busy year usually means a busy holiday season, and that puts pressure on pricing.

Rule 1: Your "was" price must be real

The FTC's Guides Against Deceptive Pricing (16 CFR Part 233) are the federal baseline for sale pricing. The key points for a holiday sale:

  • A former price must be genuine. If a tag says "Was $X, now $Y," $X must be a price you actually offered to the public, openly and in good faith, for a reasonably substantial period.
  • Don't inflate before you discount. Raising a price in November so a Black Friday "discount" looks bigger is the classic example of a fictitious bargain.
  • Comparisons to other stores need backing. If you claim a price is below what others charge, the comparison price should reflect what substantial sales in your area actually happen at.
  • Small reductions aren't sales. A trivial cut labeled "Reduced" is misleading.

The practical fix is simple: keep a record of each item's price history, so you can show the "was" price was real.

Rule 2: The shelf and register must agree

In many states, weights-and-measures inspectors check that shelf prices match register prices, often using the NIST Handbook 130 procedure. A store passes at 98% accuracy or better, and a small store is typically checked with about 50 items. Sale items are often sampled separately because they're where mistakes happen.

Holiday-season risks:

  • A sale is set up in the POS but not on the shelf, or the reverse.
  • A doorbuster ends but the sign stays up.
  • A price is changed at the counter for one customer and never reverted.

Plan the promotion calendar early

  1. List every promotion with start and end date and time: Black Friday doorbusters, weekend deals, ammo specials, accessory bundles and any manufacturer promotions.
  2. Set the regular price first and keep a record of it.
  3. Prepare signs and tags in advance, labeled by start date.
  4. Assign someone to switch tags at each start and end time.
  5. Do a register spot check at the start of each promotion: scan a few items and compare to the shelf.

Handle manufacturer promotions carefully

Mail-in rebates and manufacturer promotions are popular in firearms retail. If you show a price "after rebate" on a tag, make the actual price paid at the register clear too, so customers aren't surprised.

Where digital tags help

Holiday promotions are exactly where digital tags pay off: a promotion can start and end on schedule, without staff re-tagging during the busiest hours, and the shelf price stays aligned with what you've set.

PriceTaglet started with coin and bullion stores, but the hardware and dashboard can show any price: E-Ink tags, a hub that plugs into an outlet, and a browser dashboard with manual price control. Scheduled promotions and POS connections for gun stores are features we want to build with a real store.
