During World War II, the US Mint removed nickel from the Jefferson Nickel, adding 35% silver to conserve nickel for the war effort. These "War Nickels" (mid-1942 through 1945) contain 1.75 grams (0.0563 troy oz) of pure silver per coin. They're identified by the large mintmark above Monticello on the reverse.
